Week 6

Despite a valiant effort we were unable to get by the gargantuan John Glenn Middle School Track Team.  Nevertheless, our athletes continue to post PR’s across the board! Ryan McCormack (100m) Tristan Norgaard (200, LJ), Mia Rent (Mile), Sazie Wrentmore (LJ) remain undefeated on the season.  McCormack and Norgaard were joined by Jayden Taylor and Gio Sailsman in the 4x100 relay to win dominantly and post a time of 52.1 that is surely one of the best in the state this season. I would like to thank all the families who helped get their athletes to the meet and alleviate our bus issues.  We have  full week of practices before heading back out on the road again next week.  We may find ourselves in a similar transportation for our 5/17 and 5/19 meets at Concord and Billerica.  The hope is we will be able to use the mini-bus (14 seats) if necessary, but may look for transportation assistance again.  Some Athletic Fee payments are overdue,  these must be paid to participate in the 5/17 meet.  Please reach out if you have any questions.

Week 5

The Middle School Track Team got off to an impressive start to the meet schedule with victories over Watertown and Weston on both the Boys and Girls side.  We will hit the road for the first time this Friday to face John Glenn Middle School in Bedford which is typically a formidable opponent.  Despite a fierce headwind on Friday, many of our athletes posted PR's.  Hopefully we can continue that against the Buccaneers!

Monday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

- Our Relay teams for Friday's meet will be announced.  This will allow further chemistry and hand-off practice as well as give other athletes a chance to form their own relay squads.

Tuesday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

- Line-ups for Fridays meet will be announced and posted to the blog after.

Thursday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Friday - Away Meet at Bedford at 4:30.  The town is providing us with two buses to Bedford that should leave shortly after school and return around 6:30.  If you plan on attending the meet and would like to bring your child home from Bedford, please email the coaches to inform us about your pick-up plan.  It is a town rule that families need to notify coaches if they plan on bringing their child home following a sporting event.  When you do depart from the meet, please check-in with Coach Moloney so we can keep an accurate list.  Thank you for your cooperation with this town rule.  As always, feel free to email if there are any lingering questions

Week 4

We hope everyone had a restful break, the team is jumping right into our meet schedule as we return to school.  If you have not yet viewed it, our line up for Monday's meet can be seen here.  As a reminder, only the first heat of the sprinting events go towards team scoring, later heats are subject to change based on the amount of total participants.  Athletes not running on the "A Team" for the relays are encouraged to form their own foursomes to compete.  Families are expected to drive athletes to home meets and we are hoping to do first call for the mile and field events at 4:00.  As team members arrive, they can congregate on the near side of the bleachers, please be mindful of the high school practices that will be taking place in the same area.  Here is a our schedule for the week:

Monday - HOME Meet at at Wayland High School from 4:00 - ~6:00

Tuesday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Thursday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Friday - HOME Meet at Wayland High School vs Weston Middle School from 4:00 - ~6:00

- as we did with our two time trials, athletes will have the chance to move around and try different track events.  We will also cycle in new participants for our field events.

We are very excited to start competing.  If there are any questions, feel free to reach out.

Week 3

The track team had a successful week 2 that included a full time trial and the beginning of our shot put and long jump training. We have been told that it will not be possible to transport the athletes to the high school via bus for practice, we will have to do the best with the equipment and outdoor space we have at middle school. This also includes transportation for home meets. Athletes families will be responsible for getting them to the high school for home meets, which includes the day we return from break. The athletic department is working on transportation for our METCO athletes to get to the high school on home meet days. To participate in the first meet, families must have the athletic fee paid, use the following link to complete the process if you have not already done so: https://unipaygold.unibank.com/default.aspx (enter "Wayland Public Schools’ Athletic Program" in the search bar.)

We had a large amount of unexcused absences from practice last week. If you have not already communicated to the team any conflicts (eg: Honors chamber orchestra, jazz band etc...) please do so. All other absences need to be communicated to the coaches via email or note from home. Athletes who have several unexcused absences will be restricted from participating in meets.

Our first meet is fast approaching, but is somewhat inconveniently that day we return from break. Next weekend we will post some suggested activities for those looking to stay active over break as well as our line-up for the first meet.

Monday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Tuesday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Thursday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

We will be wearing our jerseys to school for team spirit (please bring a check for $11 if you do not have a jersey). We may move this up to Tuesday if the weather continues to look questionable for this day

Friday - No School - No Practice

Week 2

We had a very productive first week despite the cold and with the fields now clear for the spring have settled in between the baseball and softball fields for the season.  Currently, we do not have confirmation for transportation to the high school so we will have to do our best to prep for field events at the middle school.  There is rain in the forecast for later in the week, if practice is cancelled we will email no later than 1.  Lastly, our jerseys are available for those who do not have one (they are same as XC).  Please bring a check for $11 made out to Wayland Boosters to practice to receive one.

Monday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Tuesday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

- Today will be the first of our team time trials.  We have all the distances marked out at various places around the school, so athletes can get their first taste of racing

Thursday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Week 1

Welcome again to the WMS Track & Field Team, please take a moment to read the introduction post below and the "Team Expectations" tab above.  We will be posting every weekend with updates on the week ahead, email will only be used to communicate changes/postponements in the practice/meet schedule.  You can use the links on the right to get email update notifications and google cal subscription (the calendar is also viewable at the bottom of the page).

Monday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

The first day of Spring Track will unfortunately feel a lot more like winter.  Day one involves a lot of information and learning team norms.  We will maximize indoor time for these portions but we will be going out for some light activity so bundle up! Our team meeting spot will be announced at the end of the day. First day topics will include:

- team expectations for practice and meets

- typical practice run down

- range of intensity of exercise

- striving for improvement

- learning your best events and who to practice with

- shoes and gear

- staying hydrated and bringing a water bottle, heat safety etc..

- Q&A

If time permits we will do sample sized workouts for both sprinting (6x100m) and distance (1 mile jog/walk) to help athletes figure out there place on the team

Tuesday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Day two will see us slide into our normal practice routine which includes: team jog and dynamic warm-up, splitting up into distance and sprint squads, and regrouping for stretching and cool down.  Eventually, we will be using the soccer field for many of these activities.  The fields have not yet been approved for spring sport use.  Until that time we will be warming up in the overflow parking lot/former DPW.  Athletes should meet at the basketball courts to await the start of practice.

Thursday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

Friday - practice at the middle school from 3:30-4:45

IMPORTANT:  Athletes who do not have an up-to-date physical will not be allowed to participate in any exercises at practice.  If you are unsure about physical status please contact Nurse Yumi (yumiko_murai@waylandps.org)

We are very excited to get the season going.  The hope is to have our first practice at the High School next week.  Stay tuned!

Monday, March 7, 2022

Welcome to the Team

With the snow melting, the weather warming, the anticipation for track & field season is mounting!   Here are some information to know as we head into the season:

Our team will practice every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday starting at 3:30 and ending around 4:45.  We compete against other middle schools, events include 100, 200, 400, 800, mile, 4x100, 4x400, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Please click on the "Joining the Team" tab at the top of page and follow the steps in order to attend practice and compete.  Our full schedule of meets and practices will be available on the 15th

We can't wait to see you at the first day of practice on Monday the 28th of March!  Here is what to expect for the first day:

  • We will meet at 3:45 in the field between softball and baseball
  • Our first practice will feature a sample of sprint and distance workouts and go over team expectations and guidelines while answering any questions
  • Athletes should come prepared with the proper athletic attire and running shoes.  Local running shops like Marathon Sports in Wellesley offer 20% off for student athletes
  • Hydration is very important, especially as the weather warms up.  We ask that athletes bring their own water bottles that are filled up inside before practice.  We want to minimize wasted plastic and water discarded on the fields
  • After the first practice we will be sending out a questionnaire to better get to know the athletes and organize the team
Tuesdays practice will move forward with our team splitting into sprint and distance squads

We are very excited to get the season going, check back on Mondays for information about the coming week!  If you have any questions please reach out using the "Contact Information" tab above.
